This morning we prayed and then watched a video of how kindness can run a full circle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzbNMHNSi2E The children wrote in their gratitude journal then shared things that they are thankful for. We listened to student's convict letters then had a comprehension quiz on the convicts. In Maths we played times tables bingo and revised 6 and 9 and 12 times tables. The class finished their calendars and christmas cards and snowflakes then used augmented reality to make their COLAR colouring pages come to life. Here is the webpage to print out the pictures and the App is free to download. It was great fun. http://colarapp.com
We listened to stories from around the world on how christmas is celebrated and practised some christmas tongue twisters. After lunch the year 4 teachers had a meeting and students watched clips from the St. Vincent's Digifest.
Remember to return your secret santa letter. I have printed off some spares if you need one.

This morning we prayed for the lead up to Advent, we offered an Our Father and then watched a Christmas Video. In pairs the children told their partner how much they were grateful for that person while pressing their hands out, a fun trick with muscle memory. The class made owls for Mrs Johannes's going away book and then cleaned out their desks. Pencil cases and satchels and library bags need to come back Friday to take to new classes. We listened to more convict letter presentations and had another quiz. We met our buddies for an exchange of cards and played some games. Remember the School Awards ceremony tomorrow.

Thursday
This morning we welcomed parents to class for a heartwarming speech and presentation. Thank you so much for your kind words and warm sentiments, I was deeply touched by your kindness and generosity. After the prayer the children couldn't wait for Secret Santa, so many thoughtful friends. We excitedly went to the oval for the carnival rides then after morning tea and more rides we watched a movie 'Epic' in the media room. After our class party with many amazing and yummy treats ( thank you parents) we played some games and said farewell to Max T. We sang Happy Birthday to Andrea and enjoyed iceblocks. Tomorrow the children meet their new teacher and classmates and head to the Church for our End of year Liturgy. Then it's a big goodbye and Happy Holidays at 12pm. Have a look at the Christmas Carol link for dates and times of carols.
I was disappointed to hear some children's highlights were cut from the disc, I have the original so if you like to send a USB I will copy it for you tomorrow. Sleep well after a huge day!

Social Inclusion Week is about encouraging communities to reconnect and be inclusive of all cultures, age groups, nationalities and the disadvantaged. Social Inclusion Week aims to help Australians feel valued and to give people the opportunity to participate fully in society. It’s about connecting with local communities, work mates, family and friends to build relationships and networks, addressing isolation and exclusion by supporting people who may be unable help themselves. Wednesday
Today is the Feast day of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary's parents, Joachim and Anne, had been childless until an angel visited them to tell them that they would have a daughter called, 'Mary'. Today's feast celebrates the day when Joachim and Anne took their daughter to the temple to consecrate (or 'promise') her to God. We talked abut our own baptism and confirmation and the class watched clip. We prayed to Mary to help us be more like her, kinder to our friends and respectful to our parents. After swimming the class enjoyed History Prezi's from Tiana, Tyreece, Brock and Maucauley. In Maths we practised times tables, then learnt about reducing or enlarging dimensions on a scale drawing. In Geography students finished researching their countries' climates. We added more work to the portfolios and student's finished work including their letter from a convict. Remember swimming is first up so wear your swimsuit under your uniform. Homework and spelling test tomorrow!

Friday by Mady Gray
Friday began with a prayer for St Celica. It is said that as she was dying, St Cecilia sang to God. As a consequence, she is the patron saint of musicians and church music. St Cecilia lived in Italy during the second century and was martyred for her faith. In her honour we sang two hymns. We then did the spelling pretest and explored the sounds in the last Soundwaves unit for the year, the sound 'er'. The class revised spelling rules for CVC and CVCC words and discussed prefixes and suffixes. Before we went to the library we tried a couple of yoga poses, then returned to Guided Reading Groups. After morning tea we watched a video on bullying.

Congratulations to Emily and Connor for being awarded the Mercy Quality Award for Spirituality and Faith. We read from Nanberry and enjoyed listening to life in the Colony. Good luck to Jessica who is getting braces today. I hope everyone has a safe and happy weekend. The countdown to Christmas is on so remember to Share the Joy!

This morning at the Church Assembly Year 2 acknowledged that today is Remembrance Day, the day that signifies the moment World War I was symbolically declared to be over, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, November 1918. The day of remembrance has now come to represent and honour all those who have served for their countries in the armed forces. On this 95th anniversary we gathered in silence listened to the sounds of the Last Post. As we remember all war dead, we pray for peace. The class returned to discuss what they knew about Remembrance Day and we completed a worksheet. Students practised their spelling activities before Reading Groups. After morning tea we revised improper fractions and plotted fractions and decimals on a number line. We watched a video on writing decimals then worked on IXL. The Christmas tree for the 'Share the Joy' appeal was delivered to our classroom, remember to bring in a gift or food for the St Vincent De Paul Society to 'Share the Joy'. In History we discussed what life was like in Australia once the convicts arrived. Students then worked on their Prezi's. Wednesday
This morning we discussed the Typhoon in the Philippines and watched some news footage. As a class we are shocked and saddened to hear of the loss of thousands of lives and of the suffering of millions as a result of Typhoon Haiyan.
Our prayers are with all who have lost loved ones and all those who are traumatised by the disaster and in desperate need of food, water, shelter and medical attention. We pray for those who are most vulnerable in this crisis: children separated from their parents, the sick and injured, the disabled and the elderly. We talked about the change in our Christmas appeal jar being sent to the Philippines. Remember to bring in any loose change to put in the jar. We also talked about the St Vincent De Paul 'Share the Joy' Christmas Appeal, there is only one present underneath our Christmas tree at this stage, please be generous Year 4 Green. After spelling activities we listened to Prezi's from Christian, Jayke, Mady, Tyler, Eliza and Max T. After Reading Groups, we played a game as a class of converting fractions to decimals and then revised dividing decimals by 10. In Science we became soil scientists and observed the effect of water on the erosion of soil. We watched a clip and then examined strategies to control erosion. We went around the school and noticed areas affected by erosion. Remember homework due tomorrow and also the spelling test.

This morning we watched a moving and informative CARITAS presentation on the devastation in the Philippines and prayed as a class for the victims and families of such a tragedy. Thank you to the families who sent in gifts for the Share the Joy Christmas Appeal. After the spelling pretest we looked at the homework expectations for next week and explored the 'are/air' as in 'chair' sounds in the Sound waves unit. We revised compound words and homophones. After Guided Reading Groups we were impressed by the History Prezi's from Jessica, Ashleigh, Emily, Connor and James. In Mathematics we practised times tables then learnt how to enter our results in a spreadsheet in Excel and save it. In Science we revised predictions and observations from our Soil Scientist field experiment. In Art we discussed different styles and genres of art and looked at images of Cubism, Impressionism, Pop Art and Abstract Art. Children are using one of these styles to create a family portrait. Our class led the assembly this afternoon and were excellent role models. They spoke confidently and projected their voices well. Congratulations to BJ and Tyler for being awarded the Mercy Quality Award for Spirituality and Faith. Enjoy your weekend!

Week 5 Care and Compassion
Share the Joy Christmas Appeal
We welcomed their week with a truly special Church Assembly led by the Grade Ones exploring the concept of 'Share the Joy'.
We are inviting children and parents to donate gifts to go
under the tree in their class. These
gifts will be donated to the St Vincent De Paul Society. Mrs Johannes described the plight of families that could not afford food or gifts at Christmas and how Christmas is about giving. We returned to the class to talk about Movember and created a moustache word cloud - Tagexdo for our own father's or men we know that are affected by cancer, sickness or depression. We prayed for these and all men that God may bless them.
After reading groups we continued with Art and our patterning. We discussed high lights of year 4 and wrote a description as tomorrow we are going to the green room to record ourselves for the School Diary. On our MacBooks we learnt in iMovie how to reverse a video clip, we created our own by tearing paper and drawing doodles then reversed the images, it was very simple and great fun. In Maths we learnt how to read a Pie Graph and worked in our Envision texts. In History we revised the journey of the First Fleet, set up a Prezi account and chose our person form the First Fleet to present. We then discussed the resources available on the weekly on the History link. A busy and productive day.
Tuesday
This morning we stilled our minds and bodies and listening to a song on God's love. We prayed for people affected by addictions such as gambling and the harm it causes.
The class went to the green room and filmed their highlights go Year Four piece and then added an image to the green screen. After reading groups we discussed the Melbourne Cup and revised Probability and Chance. We had a race by rolling the dice and students moving forward that many spaces. Jessica tallied which number was rolled the most frequently. We then graphed the results. It was much easier to plot a bar graph than a pie graph. We also watched a BBC clip on probability:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/maths/data/probability/play/
In Science we revised the difference between erosion and weathering and examined physical versus chemical weathering. In History the class worked on their First Fleet 'Prezi' with Mrs Elliot and watched the Cup. A note on St Vincent's night was sent home this afternoon.

Wednesday
This morning we prayed outdoors, we were mindful of the wind on our face, the grass on our legs, the sound of nature. We discussed how peacefulness has to start with us - and sometimes this can be hard. Through living Jesus' commandment to love one another, we can take the extraodinary step of letting go of hatred. Forgiveness and love, though hard, has the potential to change the world! We returned to class to work on Geography and learnt more about rain forests with a clip on rain forests in Madagascar. We learnt about new species being discovered in the canopy of the rain forests. In English students peer edited their Camp recounts. After reading groups we were excited to explore the Primary Atlas and learnt about different kinds of maps and revised latitude and longitude. In Maths the class revised partitioning and then explored Venn diagrams. After lunch we used Venn diagrams or a table to complete the comparison of the Creation stories from Genesis 1 and the Butchulla People. Remember homework is due tomorrow (no extension homework this week). The weekly spelling test is also tomorrow.

Thursday
In prayer, we learnt that Anthony Demellow was an Indian Jesuit who wrote stories to inspire reflection and thought. His most famous work, 'The Prayer of the Frog' contains short stories and parables for reflection with the intention of waking us up to what is and what could be. We read a few of these short stories and reflected on them. After the spelling test we printed the Camp recounts and researched information for the Prezi on a person from the First Fleet. Some students are choosing convicts with little information available on them. There are resources available in class with much information on the following people: George Rapper, George Johnston, John Palmer, Henry Kable, Joseph Tuso, Edward Whitton, Edward Miles, Jane Langley, Olivia Gascoigne, Edward Parkinson, James Bloodsworth, Elizabeth Hayward and of course Captain Arthur Phillip. I recommend to choose one of these people and supplement your information with more inquiry on your own. There are generally not pictures of these people from the First Fleet but you can include pictures of Britain, the ships and Australia. See the link on History for a roster of presentations beginning next Tuesday and the rubric you will be marked with.
After morning tea the children had specialist classes with Music, Library, Sport and Italian. Below is the list of words for spelling from Soundwaves, these words are to be added to the core words if they are misspelled in the pre-test tomorrow. Remember not all words in the English language follow the 'rules' such as 'i before e except after c'.

Friday
We started Friday with the Year Four Mass led by Father Paul. Mr Bishop's class did a beautiful job leading the prayers. We returned to the classroom for a spelling pretest and explored the new sounds in the Soundwaves Unit 34 (TH). Well done to Leonardo and Mady who achieved 100% in the Spelling Test last week. After visiting the library where we read a story on a child's experience of war in acknowledgement of Remembrance Day on Monday, we complied the Highlights of Year Four into an iMovie. In Mathematics we revised factors of numbers and examined using reasoning to solve sums. We then explored using textures in Art and printed paper with wire, wool, bubble wrap, brushes and sponges. This is going to be our field of Poppies for Remembrance Day. Congratulations to BJ and Tiana for being awarded the Mercy Quality Awards for Faith and Spirituality at assembly. Remember to practise your Prezi, presentations start Tuesday. Also please complete any Study Ladder activities you still need to do. Enjoy a safe and happy weekend.

Week 4 Care and Compassion
Friday - Dad and Kid's Camp Out and All Saint's Day
Monday
This morning Mr. Stone's Year 2 class led the school in the Church Assembly on Care and Compassion. We returned to the class to talk about camp and reflect on our strength's, weaknesses, how responsible, considerate and co-operative we were. In Religion, the class finished off their interpretation of Psalm 148. In History we talked about what life was like in 18th century England, we watched the trailer for 'Oliver Twist' and talked about reasons that 1500 people set sail on the First Fleet in 1787. After Guided Reading Groups, Mrs Elliot came to class and gave us a spelling test and explored the new Soundwaves sounds 'Ch' and 'Sh'. In Mathematics, the class discussed graphs and data and revised bar graphs and taking surveys. They then conducted a class survey on which was the favourite activity on camp. After lunch, the class started a recount of their time at camp and imported photo's off the common drive to a word document. The class learnt how to use the Thesaurus in tools to make their writing more descriptive. We then examined the homework requirements for this week. Remember your soil samples for tomorrow!

Tuesday
This morning we prayed with song, while thinking about how we can make a difference, "Aspire not to have more, but to be more" (Oscar Romero). The class worked on their spelling activities and we then used spelling city for a game of Hang mouse after typing in the spelling words. We read a story about Life in 18th Century England, then worked on our camp recounts and had Guided Reading. After morning tea, the class explored Envision topic 12.4 Making Graphs. We watched a video, worked in our texts then worked on IXL. In Science we revised soils and rocks then examined different soil samples with a magnifying glass. Student's observations of the samples were of a high standard as they commented on colour, texture and the size of particles. The students began classifying the rock samples they brought from home. After lunch we went to spend time with our Year One buddies. Remember your reading responses for homework.

Wednesday
This morning we prayed with 'icons', we learnt that the word icon means image.
Praying with icons is an ancient prayer practice that involves keeping our eyes wide open, taking into our heart what the image visually communicates. We focus not on what is seen in the icon, but rather on what is seen through it -- the love of God expressed through God's creatures. After the spelling activities we started a new Geography activity examining the rain forests and deserts of the world. Students then chose one country in each of these continents to explore in detail. The class worked well in reading groups then had a Statistics and Probability test. Students finished their recounts and then Brock shared with the class highlights of his trip to San Francisco. He spoke about Alcatraz the prison and about riding bikes over the Golden Gate Bridge. In Religion we listened to the Creation story then found the story on Biblegateway and talked about the book of Genesis. We then compared it to the Creation story of the Butchulla People on Fraser Island which we watched a youTube clip on and discussed similarities and differences. Remember homework is due tomorrow.

Thursday
This morning we prayed as we watched a Litany of the Saints Clip. Students then searched for a saint of their choice and researched and wrote about their saint. Most children found a saint with the same name. We talked about what Halloween means. You might be surprised to learn that Americans didn't come up with Halloween - it is actually a pagan festival that honoured the dead. Hallow is an Old English word and literally means holy and can be used to describe saints. Halloween actually means All Hallows Eve - or the day before All Saints Day. Students worked on their Saints and recounts of camp then had a spelling test. Specialist classes were after lunch with Music, Library, Sport and Italian. We talked about next week's homework task of researching a convict or crewman off the First Fleet. We also discussed patterning and art for tomorrow. Check out images on Zentangle for patterning ideas.

Friday
For All Saints day, students shared information they had researched about the Saint of their choice. We had a spelling pretest, explored the new sounds in Soundwaves and discussed rules for spelling of CVC words (consonant - vowel - consonant) (hop - hopping).
After reading groups the class enjoyed the art activity of patterning. Their choice of colour and patterning techniques looked amazing. We discussed the History assignment that will be an oral presentation to the class presented with "Prezi" (See homework).
Our class was commended at assembly and awarded a certificate for our writing in the write for fun contest we entered. Out of 12 500 entries our class had 10 students in the final judging, unfortunately no one placed but well done. A special mention to Jayke Menefy who was awarded the Care and Compassion Mercy Quality award for his wonderful attitude and team work at Camp. Homework is on the link and the resources for the History assignment that we will start Monday are on the link for History. Enjoy a safe and happy weekend.

Week 3 Specialist classes Wednesday (sport), Camp Thursday to Friday.
Bring a red shirt Friday for 'Day for Daniel'.
Monday is student free - No School
Tuesday
This morning students enjoyed the rescheduled TFA Soccer workshop, students interested can attend an after school program on Fridays from 3.15pm to 4.15pm. Registration forms are in classroom. We returned to class and learnt that that the Psalms are poems, and poems intended to be sung. We listened to Psalm 148 'Come praise the Lord', then read it as a class. Students identified a verse that resonated with them and then illustrated the verse. Students finished printing their History scripts. We had reading groups then after morning tea while Mrs West was conferencing with students on their maths, the class were given passwords to 'Sumdog', a maths site. We then explored the properties of different types of rocks and as a class examined these properties not the BBC Skillwise Bitesize website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/7_8/rocks_soils.shtml
The class learnt that most rocks take a long time to be broken down and we discussed the Twelve Apostles. We learnt that soils also have the different properties (permeability, porosity). After lunch, there was a camp meeting and students then worked on their goals for camp. Please remember to bring back any Swimming surveys. Spelling test tomorrow.

Wednesday - Only one more sleep!
This morning we prayed for the people affected by the bush fires. We prayed through song. The class had a spelling test then worked on grammar in Soundwaves. We signed our 'Goals' for camp sheet and discussed everyone's goals and the best way to accomplish these. History interviews were finished and emailed for marking and students worked on their posters for 'Courage'. After reading groups the class had specialist lessons. Prior to going home, we had a prayer to keep us safe on camp and for those people affected by the bush fires. See you at 7.30am in the morning in the shed. Visit the Camp link for more information.

Thursday - The adventure begins!
Excited children and families met in the shed for the start of the adventure to Kindilan. After the goodbyes and an almost hour bus trip we arrived for an orientation and morning tea. The groups were quickly introduced to their group leader and activities included Catapults, Initiatives, Kayaking, the Challenge Course (ropes), Rafting and Orienteering. At 5pm, we explored our cabins, showered and prepped for dinner. After dinner the children surprised and delighted everyone with a talent show that included magic, dance, song and acting. Mr Yates led a liturgy and we returned to the rooms for lights out at 9.30pm.

Friday
Most children were up at 5.30am, we had a walk for Daniel at 7am and then breakfast. Followed by an activity, morning tea and another activity before a final clean up, lunch and the bus ride back to school. It was wonderful to see so many children shine. At the final debrief, the camp leader mentioned that this group of year 4's were the best they had seen in a long time. I was so impressed with the wonderful team work, resilience and good manners. Thank you for a fabulous camp!

Week 2 Care and Compassion
Monday began with a discussion about Anti-Poverty Week, a week where all Australians are encouraged to think about issues of poverty and hardship here in Australia or overseas as knowing about people's suffering is hopefully the precursor to us doing something about it! The school had the Church assembly where Prep R shared their wonderful ideas on Care and Compassion. Mr. Yates helped the class during the morning session while Mrs West was at a moderation meeting. The class sat a diagnostic maths test. After morning tea we worked on our persuasive interviews and started filming. The class had a spelling pretest and we worked on grammar in Sound waves. We all enjoyed the camp meeting and hearing about activities we would be doing. Mrs West then went to a work shop on religion then another development course on spelling strategies and learnt some great strategies we can use in class.
Tuesday was a great day! We started with a prayer offered to 'Mother Teresa of Jesus' as it was her feast day. We also prayed for class members family and friends. The class embraced the new spelling activities to help students think more critically about spelling and recognise patterns. We then worked on persuasive history interviews while Mr Yates helped the class and Mrs West took students to the green room. The class enjoyed the new reading groups and worked well. After morning tea, the class continued with the Maths diagnostic testing. We then filmed more interviews. Well done to the students who came to maths club, we revised some important points and I was so proud of the students trying so hard. After lunch the Year 4's met in the media room to discuss more camp requirements. Can't wait for next week! Mrs. West then enjoyed seeing so many students at the sacramental interviews. Congratulations to the children who are making their reconciliation next week.
Wednesday
This morning we prayed the Aboriginal Our Father:
You are Our Father, you live in heaven
We talk to you, Father you are good (repeat)
We believe your Word Father
We your children, give us bread today (repeat)
We have done wrong, we are sorry
Help us Father not to sin again (repeat)
Others have done wrong to us
And we are sorry for them, Father today (repeat)
Stop us from doing wrong, Father
Save us all from the evil one (repeat)
You are Our Father, you live in heaven
We talk to you, Father you are good (repeat)
The class was very reverent and respectful. Students then worked on their Spelling Table activities (remember spelling test tomorrow). We went to the Green Room and filmed more History Explorer interviews. Some students went for Reading and Comprehension testing. After morning tea, the class worked on their times tables. We then learnt how to create a table in a word document and save it. The class enjoyed starting the Science unit and explored what they knew about how the Earth changes, and what they know about rocks, soils, landscapes changing. Year 4 then had another camp meeting. After lunch we continued with our History and learnt how to set advanced tools in iMovie to access the green screen and set the screen. Student that had finished, worked on Toon Doo's. Remember homework due tomorrow.

Thursday
Today is the Feast of St Ignatius of Antioch and in his honour for prayer we meditated an Ignatian meditation . A different St. Ignatius believed that our imagination and senses can help us to enter into the events of Jesus’ life. This particular method of meditation enables us to share in a special personal encounter with Jesus. The stories of sacred scripture have a special power to connect right into our own lived experience. The class then had the spelling test, we played a syllable game in groups, then explored the Science unit further and learnt about weathering and rock types. Students enjoyed a video by Bill Nye the Science Guy on How the Earth Changes. The students then had specialist lessons with Music, Library, Sport and Italian. The class returned to examine what "Courage" meant to them and started to design a poster with a catch phrase and logo to demonstrate a real life example of having courage, whether it be a stand against bullying or to try something new.

Friday
This morning we welcomed Mr. Yates to the class to work with us in circle time. He led the prayer for the families affected by bush fires. He explained that we need to bring a red shirt on camp in memory of Daniel Morcombe. We then explored the new sound "ow" in Soundwaves and talked about prefixes and suffixes. Mrs. West showed us some games on the site 'TopMarks' that cemented these principles. The class returned books to the library then we went to the Green Room to finish filming and editing our History interviews. Mrs West handed back the maths tests and conferenced with students on areas where they need to focus. We had the year 2, 3, and 4 assembly. Congratulations to Max M who was awarded the Care and Compassion award. We returned to class for 'roll the dice' and the prize box draw. The soccer demonstration was moved to Tuesday for the higher grades because of the rain. Home work this week is reading and learning spelling and finishing off any study ladder maths activities (see link). Enjoy the long weekend, no school Monday!

Term 4 Week 1
Welcome back to Term 4! I hope you enjoyed a peaceful and happy holiday. A letter will be emailed home this week with key dates for the term. We started the first day of term with much excitement. Students shared with each other their three favourite holiday adventures. We then thanked God for a safe holiday and asked him to bless us this term. We talked about World Mission month. This year's theme is 'Restore hope to someone special'. You have an opportunity to begin the term by making a difference to others! In English we explored the new sounds from unit 29 in Sound waves, revised compound words and had a spelling pretest. There will be a spelling test this week but homework will start Thursday this week to be returned Thursday next week. The class then revised a 'Recount' and explored how it has an orientation, a sequence of events and a conclusion and that a recount must be written in past tense. Students planned a recount of their holidays and then composed and edited their work. In Maths we revised fractions and learnt about place value to the hundredths. In History, the class worked on their interview with an explorer and persuasive writing. We then read a story on the First Fleet and learnt Captain Arthur Phillip was the commander and first Governor. After lunch Mrs Elliot revised concepts that will be on the maths test this Friday and then allowed students to practise with a partner their History interviews that will be filmed in the Green room later this week. Wishing everyone the best for a wonderful term 4!
Wednesday WE HAVE OUR MACBOOK AIR's!!!!!!!
This morning started with an echo of The Lord's Prayer, we wished Tyler a happy birthday and then worked on spelling and sound waves with Mrs Elliot while Mrs West was moderating with the Year 4 teachers for the Religion unit. Students worked on their History interview. In maths the class completed Part 1 of the diagnostic review, with part 2 to be finished on Friday. Students then did further work on fractions and decimals and completed a worksheet. The class was very excited to receive their own MacBook Air's and Mr Kelly explained how to put on the covers then Mr Kearney helped format and set up the passwords for the accounts. Remember sports uniform tomorrow!

The class was very excited to receive their own MacBook Air's and Mr Kelly explained how to put on the covers then Mr Kearney helped format and set up the passwords for the accounts. Remember sports uniform tomorrow!
Thursday
World Mental Health Day raises public awareness about mental health issues. This morning we prayed for those with mental disorders and contemplated the gap for support in poor resource countries. We read a Japanese fable from 'STORYJUMPER' and reflected on the message. Mr Kearney helped us format the new Macbook Air's and then we started one of the ACER tests. The students went to specialist classes, Music, Library, P.E. and Italian then returned to the class to reset new passwords on their MacBooks. Mrs West attended an ICT meeting after school and is excited about new Apps and technology to use in the classroom including Tellagami (avatars), Haiku Deck, Sockpuppet App, Wordfoto, Blendspace and Pixlr. Stay tuned!

This morning we meditated on the words 'Come Holy Spirit' to music and contemplated the fruits of the Holy Spirit and how we can use these to make a difference. Mr. Kearney helped set up the wireless connection on our MacBook Airs and we then completed the ACER tests. We went to the oval for a team building game and the class were very proud of themselves to work out an activity with the whole class linking hands (after three attempts). Congratulations to Jayke and Mady for being award Mercy Quality awards. We then set up the school email accounts. Over the weekend, think about how you can make your explorer interview more persuasive, we will be filming in the green room on Monday. Homework is on the link. Remember to bring a jar with a little soil from your garden/path (no potting mix), we will be adding water to this next week as we explore how the earth changes. Also bring in 3 different rocks to observe. Camp information is on a link above. Enjoy the sunshine and have a great weekend.

Week 11. Poetry Cafe Wednesday 9am in class
Monday morning began with a prayer and a Youtube clip on the Bible. We examined the new unit in Soundwaves (yoo) and revised suffixes. The class wrote a poem about themselves. After reading groups we stayed in for morning tea because of the rain. In Maths, the class explored area and revised perimeter. We explored some calculations of area and perimeter on the interactive white board, watched a clip and then completed the text and a worksheet. The class also completed 'math mentals' - a review of the term's work. The recent number patterns test was handed out and tomorrow in lunch we will review the test questions that students wish to explore. The new history assignment , a persuasive interview with an explorer was introduced. After a 'wet lunch', students enjoyed working on their animations of a parable. The work is of a high standard. Remember to return camp forms. Also any library books need to be returned before the holidays.
Tuesday
We contemplated Prayer using the imagination of the Ignatian spiritual tradition. In its most common form, you take a passage from scripture, usually one of the gospels, and immerse yourself in it imaginatively using all the senses. It’s a way to engage the gospel personally, with all of our faculties. We talked about Jesus calming the waves and we imagined feeling the wind, smelling the salty air and hearing the waves. We prayed for our family and friends who are unwell.
After revising grammar, the class highlighted a passage to identify verbs, nouns, adjectives and pronouns. We then examined proper nouns and pronouns in more detail. The class had a spelling test of words from this term's Soundwaves units. Students enjoyed reading groups then after morning tea we revised measurement with metric units. The class watched a clip on measuring with millilitres and litres and grams and kilograms. We played a game on the interactive white board as a class and then worked in our maths texts and on IXL. In History, students worked on the interview with their explorer. After lunch, Mrs Singin was very impressed with the high standard of the animations. Most students have finished importing photographs into iMovie and are ready to record the sound.
4 Green is looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning if you can make it for the poetry cafe.
Remember overdue library books and also Camp Permission forms.

Wednesday
We welcomed parents and grandparents to the classroom for morning prayer and to listen and appreciate students' poetry compositions. The recitals went well, please see the photographs below. The class worked on their parable retells and most students have recorded voice and imported music to their iMovie clips.
After Reading Groups the class worked on their handwriting. In Maths, we revised perimeter and area and learnt about volume. Students watched a clip and played a game on the IWB. We explored the rules for Volume = Length X Width X Height and talked about cubic metres rather than square metres when working with area. Those finished the maths text worked on IXL. There is a test on these 3 concepts tomorrow. In History the students continued to work on their interviews with an explorer. For those finished the interviews, the class is then required to write a persuasive interview on 'why you should visit Australia'. Students enjoyed the Meal Deal supporting St Mary's which was burnt down. After lunch we read from My Father's Island, the class novel on Abel Tasman and finished off Parables. There are still some camp forms outstanding. Thank you to the parents and grandparents who were able to come to support the potty readings today.

Thursday
Students embraced contemplative prayer this morning and you could have heard a pin drop while the students silently prayed and coloured their mandala. There is something about color that energises. Something about applying the color inside given boundaries that soothes the mind. You can pray in many ways as you color: repeat scripture or a prayer phrase, allow your mind to wander around the thoughts that God gives you, simply relax into the exercise. The class did so well. We then had Tyreece's science presentation about surface tension and he made a paper clip sink then another float. After the maths test on perimeter, area and volume, the class finished their Parables. Then they had specialist lessons- music, library, P.E., and Italian. This afternoon, we talked about camp jobs and a sheet was sent home for students to have practise completing tasks. Remember any overdue library books need to be returned tomorrow.
Friday - Happy holidays!
This morning we offered a prayer to God to protect us on holidays. We thanked him for a wonderful term and each student talked about what they were looking forward to doing on the holidays. So many campers! Enjoy many happy adventures. The school went to the church for a end of term liturgy on Mercy Qualities by Mr Eamon's Year 5 class. The maths test on 'area and volume and perimeter' was handed out. Many students need to practise IXL during the holidays. Also keep up your times tables practise. We returned books to the library and borrowed new books. Students worked on their History interview with an explorer. We watched the animations the class have been working on in Religion. The desks were scrubbed and tidied and a 10 minute dvd before lunch was enjoyed. After lunch we went with all the year 4's to the oval for some games. Have a safe and happy break!
Week 10. 4 Green's Class Mass Friday - all welcome
The Preppies delighted us with their Church Assembly on Responsibility. We then returned to class and talked about 'Purposefulness', and when we set a goal we need to concentrate upon achieving it. We explored 'Dream Week', raising awareness of those suffering from cancer. Students practised the liturgical movement for the song 'God is Great' by Chris Tomlin. We then revised the homework expectations, taking note of new Study Ladder actives to do. Tomorrow is the Maths test on patterns and some students asked for extra help with identifying the pattern in equations. We worked through two worksheets as a class and revised the chapter in our text. All the class was excited about the Science Experiment presentations. The standard was extremely high and the the experiments so engaging. Throughout the day we enjoyed presentations from Jaimie who deftly explored why an egg will float in salty water. Leonardo amazed the class with poking a skewer through a balloon, and clearly explained what a fair test is. Macauley explained why coke will clean an old penny to make it like new. Daniel also experimented with coke and predicted that the coke would rise 2 metres in the air when a chemical reaction occurs. Christian engaged the students with a 'tornado in a jar' to demonstrate how spinning a bottle in a circular motion creates a tornado. Eliza enthralled the class with making a lava lamp with a chemical reaction of carbon dioxide in oil, water and food colouring.
In English we put our poems in a presentation folder and finished printing and illustrating as we look forward to inviting parents and/or grandparents to the class next Wednesday for a 'poetry cafe' after drop off. In History the class worked on their boardgames and sequencing the information.

Tuesday
Tuesday began with revising the songs for the mass. We then had the Maths test on Number Patterns. After Reading groups, we went to the Church with Mrs Johannes. Ruby and Laura presented their science experiments. Ruby demonstrated how an egg floats in salt water and Laura explained what surface tension is and the class watched pepper spreading out when dishwashing liquid broke the surface tension, After lunch the class practised spelling and then worked on their History board games.
Wednesday
We stilled our minds and bodies and offered prayers for the class's family and friends and for the Davies family. We offered a song 'Here I am to worship' as our prayer this morning. The class practised their spelling and we worked on the liturgical movement for Friday's Mass. In Maths, we started a new unit on measurement and explored the rules for finding perimeter The class enjoyed a visit from Mr. Kelly who was very complimentary on the high standard of science presentations. Today Will created a Lava Lamp and hypothesised that the size of the tablet effects the number of 'blobs'. Tiana predicted correctly that pepper will react to the soap and spread away from the soap in her experiment. Mady showed us what happens when food colouring goes into hot and cold water. The class loved watching Geena's chemical reaction to make a foaming solution. BJ amazed the students by creating an explosion of colour in a plate of milk. Max T created a lava lamp and used a torch to light up the effect. Brock made a chemical reaction that produced carbon dioxide to blow up a balloon. The class worked on their handwriting and listened to a story, "Not better, not worse, just different'. We went to the Church to practise the Mass and then worked on the History board game. Remember spelling test and homework due tomorrow. Don't forget to do your study ladder!
Thursday
This morning we offered the liturgical movement as a prayer. We then spent time with Tony O'Shea and Mr. Kelly clarifying what is 'managing yourself' and how to be in control and not give your power away. The class worked well as a team playing memory games with Tony. We then visited the Church for a final practise of the Class Mass. We returned for a quick spelling test before morning tea. The class then had specialist lessons with Music, P.E., Library, and Italian. Students enjoyed science experiment presentations from Connor who experimented with making a duck sound from a straw and talked about lung capacity and Ashleigh who questioned 'is cornflour and water a solid or a liquid?'. Please remember to return your Premier Reading Challenge completed forms. Also camp forms need to be returned. We welcome all family and friends to the class Mass tomorrow.
Friday
This morning we celebrated Mass with the community in the Parish and the class were so very reverent and respectful. Congratulations to all students of 4 Green who made a wonderful effort, I am so proud. Thank you also to the parents who came to Mass. After the Church we supported siblings and our buddy class for the early years sports carnival. Students visited the library and then after morning tea we enjoyed Science presentations. Max M. expertly shared how to make a cloud in a bottle. Mia shared with us 'The exploding lunch bag', Andrea created a chemical reaction and inflated a balloon. Emily demonstrated her experiment on invisible ink. Tyler discussed her vinegar volcano. Jayke explained why some cans float and some sink. James created an explosion in the classroom. Between experiments the class worked on their History boardgames which are due today. After lunch we attended the assembly. Congratulations to Ruby who was awarded the Mercy Quality award for responsibility. We returned to class to finish the History boardgames and for the draw and then had a game on the oval. Enjoy a safe weekend and remember those camp permission slips.
Week 9. National Child Protection Week.
Thursday Catholic Sports Carnival Pizzey Park and Ball Games St. Kevin's
School Disco Friday
This morning Year 1 presented a beautiful tribute to Fathers at the Church assembly. We returned to class and reflected on the message and wrote a prayer of gratitude for our fathers. The class also recognised some children are not so fortunate and may not have enough love, food or shelter. We shared what everyone did to celebrate Father's Day in their family. Students practised their spelling and we had a spelling pretest and worked through the sounds in the Soundwaves unit. After Guided Reading Groups, in Maths, the class revised finding rules in patterns and examined using expressions to find missing numbers. We read from the Abel Tasman Novel, practised Handwriting and worked on the History board game. After lunch, we spoke more about parables. The class worked on the script of their parable animation and finished off their Toon Doo retells of a parable. Remember to bring in some lego characters or dolls to film your animation and a USB to save your work.
Tuesday
This morning we recognised 'Blue September' and talked about men being affected by cancer and so many students shared stories of friends or family whose lives had been affected by cancer. We offered a prayer for their return to health or in their memory. After spelling practice, the class enjoyed a story called 'Enemy Pie' and then in groups we discussed 'consideration' and how thinking about your actions will affect other people and how they feel. The class entered their favourite poem in a poetry competition "Write for fun" and then we had Guided Reading Groups. In Maths explored working backwards to solve equations and completed a worksheet as a class. We also practised the times tables. The class received their board games template for history and made a start on their rules. We talked about references and reliable sources for research. In Religion, students finished their Toon Doos and worked on their animation scripts. Mrs Elliot then read from the Abel Tasman Novel. Good luck to the students competing at Catholics and Ball Games.
Wednesday
This morning the class celebrated the importance of health and physical education in the curriculum being National Health and Physical Education Day. Mrs Elliot explored Cinquains, which, by the way, is pronounced “sin-cane,” a form of poetry that is very popular because of it’s simplicity and is similar to Japanese poetic forms, such as haiku and tells a small story. In Maths, the class worked on using multiplication and division expressions (see below). Students worked on their History Board game, their Parables in Religion and discussed the Science experiments format which are due next week. I hope the athletes enjoy the competition tomorrow and wish you the best. As many students are absent tomorrow, the spelling test will be on Friday.
Thursday
Mrs Elliot started the day with a prayer for Landcare Week which connects community groups to work together to protect our land and coast for future generations. After Spelling, the class explored Maths. Many students left for Catholics and Ball Games. After Reading Groups, the class enjoyed specialist lessons with Music, P.E., Library and Italian. Remember Library books for tomorrow.

Friday
This morning we congratulated the students who competed at Catholic Athletics Carnival and at the Ball Games Carnival. Well done! We also discussed White Balloon Day, as parents and carers of children there are a number of key steps we can take to build resilience and protect our children against harm:
After the spelling test, the students had reading groups and then we visited the library. A number of students are not borrowing or bringing their library satchels to school. Next week, this will be recorded.
The class worked on their History boardgames and they are looking great. Again we talked about the difference between 'References" and a 'Bibliography'. Generally, a reference list contains only those sources you actually referred to in your assignment while a bibliography is taken to be a list of all those sources you looked at. In Science we discussed expectations and created a roster for the presentations.
We decided the songs to use in our class Mass which is happening next Friday and of course, every one is welcome. Congratulations to Mia who was awarded the Mercy Quality award for responsibility. After the assembly we practised a group move for the liturgical dance - a canon "movements introduced by one dancer are repeated exactly by subsequent dancers in turn". We then played a game of traffic lights and bullrush. Enjoy a safe weekend and remember to practise your science presentations.
- Inform children that it is wrong for adults to touch them inappropriately
- Encourage your children to feel comfortable telling you anything, especially if it involves another adult.
- Learn about the people with whom your child is spending time.
- Knowledge is power.
- Be an active participant with your children's activities, you will have a better opportunity to observe how the adults in charge interact with your children.
- Notice when someone shows one or all of your children a great deal of attention or begins giving them gifts.
- Teach your kids that they have the right to say NO to any unwelcome, uncomfortable, or confusing touch or actions by others. Teach them to tell you immediately if this happens. Reassure them that you are there to help and it is okay to tell you anything.
- Be sensitive to any changes in your children's behaviour or attitude. Encourage open communication and learn how to be an active listener.
- Practice basic safety skills with your children. Make an outing to the shops or a park a "teachable" experience in which your children can practice checking with you, using pay phones, going to the restroom with a friend, and locating the adults who can help if they need assistance.
- Be aware of safe Internet practices. Teach your child never to give out their last name, address, or phone number to a person on the Internet and never to meet Internet friends in person without a parent’s supervision and consent.
After the spelling test, the students had reading groups and then we visited the library. A number of students are not borrowing or bringing their library satchels to school. Next week, this will be recorded.

This morning we focused on mindfulness and prayed the Hail Mary before meeting the other classes in the pit for poetry performances. Our class worked so well as a team and I was so proud. It was a wonderful opportunity to see other classes and learn from our peers. We returned to the class for spelling practise and Guided Reading Groups. In maths we continued to work on finding the rule in patterns. Congratulations to Connor, Tiana and Mia who achieved 100% in spelling. In History we explored the requirements for the board game assessment. Every one has chosen one of the four explorers we have studied to create a sequence of their life for the board game. We looked at an ABC resource and read from 'Captain Cook' on the fate of the crew. We discussed some science projects students have started on and talked about how to make the presentation engaging and creative. After lunch we met our year 1 buddies and then practised the poems again. I will be in Brisbane for a religious workshop for the next two days and Mrs Elliot will be the teacher. I will drive back to conduct the eisteddfod Thursday Afternoon. Remember Father's day breakfast Thursday morning and after dad's are invited to the classroom for prayer.

Week 7. Book Week Read Across The Universe - Dress up Parade Friday
Students to dress up as a character from Shortlisted Books, a character relating to the theme or a Book Character they love
The Prep's delivered a superb Church assembly informing us all about book week and took us on a magical journey exploring various shortlisted books. After reflecting on the assembly and writing a prayer we practised the spelling. We read from the Abel Tasman novel and then learnt what a neologism was and made up some of our own new words using a set list of prefixes and suffixes. A Neologism is a newly coined term, word, or phrase. We revised spoonerisms and then had Guided Reading Groups. In maths we examined improper fractions (see below) and worked on IXL. In History we read some interesting facts about life on the Endeavour from 1768 to 1771, about Captain Cook's first voyage and how the aim was to observe the transit of Venus and to seek evidence of the Great Southern Land. The class enjoyed watching a part of the Video on Captain Cook. We practised the Eisteddfod poems and worked on finishing off the ships, poems and Religion ToonDoos Comics. Remember to bring a book to read to your buddies for Book Week Buddy Reading tomorrow.
Tuesday
We engaged in meditative prayer and talked about St Bernard, as it is his Feast Day. We prayed for the people who need Speech Therapy and those with hearing disabilities as it is National Speech Therapy Week. Will kindly bought gifts for the class from his trip to N.Z. After practising spelling we learnt the difference between a narrative poem a lyrical poem. The class enjoyed hearing Waltzing Matilda (narrative poem) and then A Sunburnt Country (lyrical). After Guided Reading Groups, we watched a clip on fractions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wL4hICyMLKU and completed a worksheet. Some of the class worked with me on the carpet and now feel confident in comparing equivalent fractions. In Science we learnt about the materials concrete and glass. We then explored properties of bags. The class worked in groups for a 'carrying dilemma' to determine what type of bag would be best to carry various objects. Students explored properties of bags such as were they waterproof, did they have high tensile strength? After lunch we met the school on the oval for Book Week to read with our buddies. We then practised our poems for the eisteddfod and talked about bringing a book review to class tomorrow. If you can bring the book too, that would be great.
Wednesday
This morning we talked about renewal and prayed the Our Father while listening to a beautiful recorded version. We prayed for our own renewal and how we can try and be a better friend, a better son or daughter, a better person. After spelling we continued to work on improper fractions and mixed numbers. The class worked through worksheets as a class and in small groups and then cemented their knowledge on IXL. For book week we wrote a book review and used the App Aurasma to bring our book reviews to life. Aurasma, a free App uses advanced image and pattern recognition to blend the real-world with rich interactive content such as videos and animations called “Auras”. I will email you the trigger pictures for you to see the book reviews when they are all recorded. After lunch we continued with the book reviews, finished poetry and met with Mrs Elderidge for poem practice. Remember homework and spelling test tomorrow.
Thursday
This morning we prayed to The Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven as it is her feast day. The students had their spelling test and we marked the Soundwaves and examined the homework for the coming week. Sheets are coming home tomorrow for more details on the science experiment oral presentation. The decomposing materials we have added to the soil are decomposing with the premium cracker almost gone. Worms were spotted eating the cracker. As a class we revised fractions as there is a test on fractions tomorrow.
After morning tea, the students had specialist lessons, with music, P.E., Library and Italian. Remember to dress up for book week parade tomorrow!

Friday - Mrs West is in Brisbane at meetings and wishes the class a fun dress up parade for book week. Enjoy a happy weekend.
Week 6. National Science Week
Monday
Year 3 presented a warm and special Church Assembly celebrating Mary and mothers. We then returned to the class and reflected on the assembly, discussed the Rosary and wrote a prayer to Mary in cursive while listening to the 'Hail Mary'. After completing the Look, Cover, Write, Check the class worked on handwriting while we read a story on trust from Genesis 22 about Abraham trusting God. After Guided reading groups and morning tea the class finished their tessallations. We then moved on to fractions. We watched a clip, worked as a class from the envision text and then played a fraction game on the whiteboard. We created our own fraction wall and coloured it. In Science we started the workbook on properties of materials and compared nail polish, highlighter pen and face paint. We noticed the mould on the cheese and bread has spread while the other materials have not shown any sign of decomposition.
In History we revised Dirk Hartog and then recreated the pewter plate he left on his visit to Shark Bay. The Eisteddford Poems are progressing well, some students still need to practice their words.

Tuesday
This morning we offered a meditative prayer of gratitude for all we have, including our homes and family and prayed for the homeless as it is National Homeless week. The class listened to a story about Joseph (Genesis 45) and we talked about God's plan for us and how we know when we are following God's plan. After our Look, Cover, Write Check, the students explored Onomatopoeia and then worked on the poetry unit. For the shape poems students are working with alliteration. Here are couple of poems:
'Netball by Mia. Nice girls, nasty girls, nimbly nail balls through narrow nets. New skirts, new names throwing balls into nets.'
'Coffee by Mady. Like a cappuccino that captures the creamy taste of caramel. Cappuccinos and coffee with a cinnamon cake crumbled over the plate. Cinnamon tea much nicer than ice cold tea.'
After Guided Reading Groups the class explored fractions and fraction walls in more detail and examined equivalent fractions (See below). In Science we discussed the material paper and watched a clip on paper from Bill Nye the Science Guy. The class then experimented with the solubility of various black inks on paper and were amazed to see the ink dissolve in water and the water turn blue. After lunch we had buddies with 1 Red and year 4 students helped with pirate craft.

This morning we started the day listening to Sarah MacLachlan singing the Prayer of Peace (Prayer of St. Francis) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGyOtU3Es_s we talked about the prayer and reflected on how we demonstrate lines from the prayer in our own life. We read a story 'Not better, not worse, just different'. In English the class explored poems that rhyme and learnt about schema. A poem’s rhyme scheme is the pattern that determines how the ends of the lines rhyme with one another. The class played some games to come up with rhyming words. We then wrote an ABAB rhyming poem.

We watched an envision clip and completed 5.4 in our Maths books. We use the MAB blocks to make various 3D shapes. In Science we continued to explore materials. We experimented on mixtures and completed our table on observations of when two materials are mixed. Some materials when mixed formed a solution, some a suspension. We observed that Bicarbonate of Soda forms a suspension and does not completely dissolve when moved with water. After lunch the class practised their eisteddfod poems and explored Captain Cook in History. After completing a page in the explorer's workbook, they watched part of a DVD on the life of Cook. Remember to think of an idea for your shape poem.
Wednesday
Today is the International Day of the Worlds' Indigenous Peoples and for prayer this morning we discussed the Dadirri which in Aboriginal culture is the quiet stillness and the waiting. "We wait on God, too. His time is the right time. We wait for him to make his Word clear to us. We don't worry. We know that in time and in the spirit of dadirri (that deep listening and quiet stillness) his way will be clear. We are River people. We cannot hurry the river. We have to move with its current and understand its ways". In English we started our Shape poems. As a class we discussed Alliteration (Ghosts glide across the golden grass gathering goblins and grabbing grasshoppers) and Onomatopoeia (Hiss, Crash, Bang) and read some more Shape poems. After the Assembly where Andrea and Eliza were awarded the Mercy Quality Award for 'Embracing Life' we were assigned roles in next Wednesday's class liturgy and played a game before the bell went. Enjoy a great weekend.
Week 1 - Coloured House Shirts Wednesday for 800m and Friday for Athletics Carnival
Monday
Welcome back. I hope everyone enjoyed a safe and restful holiday. The morning started with a prayer of thanks. We thanked God for keeping us safe over the holidays and prayed for a great Semester 2. Students wrote a reflection on Semester 1 and planned their goals for this Semester. We played a game of 'snowball' where students had to find out what their friends did over the holidays. We then revised what a recount is and focused on "Sizzling Starts" . Everyone started their holiday recount with a 'sizzling start' as a great start engages the reader immediately. We then started our class novel 'Nanberry' by Jackie French which is a true story following the lives of two brothers in 1789, an adopted Aboriginal boy, Nanberry and his white brother Andrew. Our guided reading groups have changed this semester and new books were started today.
In Maths, we began learning the 12 times tables. We played a game of 12 X bingo. We then started learning about division and how we can use diagrams to help us divide (see below). We watched a video on using addition and subtraction to divide as well as breaking the total into equal groups. The class then cemented these ideas on IXL.
In History, we worked in groups to brainstorm reasons why people explore. The class worked extremely well and came up with excellent reasons and then presented them to the class. These included: To find gold, silver and precious stones; To expand their knowledge of the world; For power, to get more land; To spread religion; to discover new things.
In Science we began the unit on 'Materials'. On 'posties', the children wrote a material, it's use and why is it used for that purpose. e.g.. Glass, windows are made of glass because it is strong and transparent. We discussed the difference between a material and a fabric. The class got 10/10 on the BBC quiz on which material is best for which purpose. We practised our poem for the eisteddfod and also revised rules for the ball games on Friday. Homework will begin Thursday.

Tuesday started with a prayer and a guided meditation session where we focused on our own personal requests to God. We said the roll "hello" in Thai, "Sa wah dee kah" (or Sah wah dee Kaup for boys). The class worked on their sizzling starts and recounts. Students enjoyed the next chapter of the class novel Nanberry. We explored the new sounds in Soundwaves Unit 19, followed by Guided reading groups. The class are excelling in the eistedfodd poems, remember to practise, practise, practise.
In maths we revised division and worked on recognising patterns (5, 10, 15, 20 is adding 5). We listened/watched a song singing the 12 X tables. In History we created a rough draft of a timeline for Explorers of Australia (http://www.abc.net.au/navigators/history/earlyexplore.htm).
In Science we explored the uses of materials with the help of the BBC bitesize website then created a spaceship made out of metal, plastic, wood and glass (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/science/materials/).
The class went to the oval and practised the ball games for Friday's Carnival. Remember coloured house shirts tomorrow.

Wednesday
The rain held off and everyone was excited to run 800 metres. There was a great show of sportsmanship with friends cheering friends and everybody doing their best. After the run, we returned to read more of Nanberry, the class novel and work on our handwriting before Guided Reading Groups. After morning tea, we continued to work on division and related multiplication and division facts. The class used the 'Read Write Think' to publish their timeline on 'The Navigators: Early Australian Explorers'. Mrs Eldridge came to the class and helped us with the 'The Car Trip' poem for the eisteddfod. She was so impressed with the students' excellent presentation. School photographs were sent home today and a comment sheet to be returned with the portfolios.
Thursday began with a prayer and a guided meditation to our Guardian Angel. The children received new homework books, they are welcome to cover these. The class was reminded to keep filling in in the Reading Log for the Premier's reading challenge. The class had a spelling pretest and we then read some more of 'Nanberry' and reflected on the loneliness the early settlers experienced. To help learn the times tables we are using 'Garage Band' to create our own music and record our voices saying the times tables. We had Guided Reading Groups then morning tea. The class then had Music, P.E., Library and Italian. Good luck for the Athletics carnival tomorrow, remember to wear your coloured House shirt.
Friday
Again, our prayers were answered and the rain held off. The Athletics carnival proved a great success.Congratulations to everyone who did their best. Well done Shannon House, followed by Mackillop, Mercy and Vincent. Enjoy a safe and happy weekend.
Welcome to term 2!
'Encouragement is the continuous process aimed at giving a child a sense of self respect and a sense of achievement.' Rudolf Dreikurs.
Week 10. Remember to wear your sport uniform on Monday for the excursion to Metricon stadium as part of the Shine program and to 'Ngutana Lui' on Thursday.
Friday was very exciting being the last day of school for the semester. The class said the role in Japanese saying how old they were. I asked "Nan sai desu ka?" (How old are you?) The boys replied "Boku wa kyoo sai desu," (9 years) and the girls "Watashi wa jyu sai desu." (10 years) (Depending on how old they are).
We then said a prayer for a safe holiday and embraced some guided meditation. We looked at the pictures from Ngutana Lui and then had a listening test on aspects from the day. We went to the church for the end of semester school liturgy and sang beautifully. The class weaved a fish like Brian taught us. If you would like to practise this on the holidays this website has very clear instructions: www.origami-resource-center.com/easy-fish.html
Easy Fish (There are also some very cool star wars origami shapes to make for the boys on this webpage).
Students then finished their Aboriginal X-Ray art or 3-D hand art. The students cleaned their desks and tied up. We joined Mr Pickford's class for a game and a movie.
Wishing every one a safe and restful holiday. Remember to keep reading and to fill in your premier's challenge reading logs. Also revise your times tables and learn your eisteddfod poems. See you in two weeks!

Thursday
The excursion to 'Ngutana – Lui' proved a huge success. The morning started with a welcome and a story explaining the importance of the Dreamtime. The children then had their faces painted with some clay in a kangaroo paw pattern to prepare for a Corroboree. The boys were in one group learning secret men’s business and the girls in another learning secret women’s skills.
After the dance around the fire pit we went on a tour of the grounds to learn about the medicinal qualities and usefulness of plants and insects. The class was fascinated to see the soap
plant foam up when the leaves were rubbed together and how to make a toothbrush
out of reeds. Lisa, our guide shared many facts: To calm a baby’s sore gums chew on a witchetty grub; To settle an
upset stomach, chew on 6 termites; To stop stomach spasms, chew on 6 squashed bull ants.
After lunch we tried our hand at dot painting a goanna using a matchstick. Most people’s favourite part of the day was learning to throw a boomerang. Merlan spoke about the names and uses of various weapons and demonstrated how to call an emu. Well done Andrea on the best boomerang throw. We then learned about the Torres Straight Island culture with Brian. He taught us about weaving and language.
The day finished with a didgeridoo performance by Robert.
Congratulations to the children of 4 Green as all were well behaved and showed such respect for the Aboriginal culture.

Wednesday
Wednesday began with a prayer to remember refugees. As Christians we need to live the values that Jesus lived. We asked God to help us to have the courage to stand up for the person who is being left out and to strengthen us to hear God's voice the next time we are tempted to put someone down. We then had a 5 minute taped Guided Meditation. The class worked well to finish their Aboriginal X-Ray art.
We practised again the eisteddfod poems and the class is sounding great. In Guided reading Mrs Conway had some interesting ideas for re-reading the text to make meaning. She timed the students and then had them read with different voices. After morning tea the school went to the Church to practise the hymns for Fridays end of Semester liturgy.
In Maths we explored 'multiplying by multiples of 10 and 100'. We then cemented these concepts with a worksheet and IXL. The IXL report indicated all students had mastered this skill (D4).

We then met with our buddies for the final time this semester. The class enjoyed playing group games and ball games. Everyone is looking forward to the excursion tomorrow. Remember your lunch, water bottle and a jumper.
Tuesday
We started with a prayer acknowledging Refugee week. In Religion we explored the differences between migrants and refugees. While a refugee’s journey begins with danger, it also begins with hope. Refugees flee their homelands not only because they fear persecution, but also because they have hope: they hope to find freedom from persecution, and safety and security for themselves and their families; they hope to be given a chance to start a new life and recover from past trauma. We watched an ABC documentary and saw what detention centres looked like and heard the stories of some of the children who were refugees. We then read a beautiful story by Mem Fox 'Whoever you are'.
The students practised the 2 poems for the eisteddfod and enjoyed Guided Reading Groups. Mr Kelly visited the class to talk about respect and rules for our safety. In Maths we revised how to multiply 2-Digit numbers by 1-Digit numbers. Many students realise the need to revise their times tables during the holidays.

After lunch we explored Aboriginal X-Ray art and the children chose their own animal and used hatching and cross hatching to draw the animal prior to painting it.
We began Monday with a prayer and some focused breathing before working on handwriting, the eisteddfod poems, then Maths. Using Mental Math to multiply, we continued breaking down algorithms into multiplying the ones then the tens and then adding these steps together. We drew arrays and MAB blocks to help us regroup. The class then had Guided Reading Groups. At 11am we boarded the buses for the short trip to Metricon Stadium where we were given a tour of the the inside of the stadium including the change rooms. We practised ball skills and tackling and hand passes. We worked with other schools and had a game of AFL. Unfortunately players weren't present but the day went very quickly and was so much fun.

We talked about miracles in our own lives and asked in what ways do we hope God can strengthen that part of us that feels powerless.
After practising the spelling words, we explored concepts in Soundwaves. We talked about synonyms, antonyms and homophones and students played some games to demonstrate their knowledge of these concepts with list words. After Guided Reading Groups, Eliza shared her interesting item and Christian kept the class guessing with the five cents in his 'What's in the bag'. We had Guided Reading Groups and speaking presentations. The class then had specialist lessons in Music, P.E., Library and Italian.
On Friday, we started the day with Brock's beautiful prayer. We had a spelling pretest and worked through Unit 13 of Soundwaves. We visited the library then enjoyed Guided Reading Groups. Max M. and Mady presented excellent weather reports and B.J. and James intrigued us with 'What's in the bag.' In Maths we looked at Data and Probability and examined 'identifying related events.' We talked about what is the chance of rolling two even numbers on a dice if the first roll is a 5? In History we examined totems of Torres Straight Islander People and some of the class correctly identified the head dress used in ceremonial dances. We had the Assembly in the shed and Emily received the Mercy Quality Award for Dignity and Justice. Congratulations Emily. Enjoy your weekend 4G and remember those reading responses.
Week 2.
Monday began with a prayer dedicated to the ANZACS, we then explored what ANZAC day meant for us and watched the re-enactment on the ABC 3D interactive ANZAC site and wrote about our thoughts in our English books. We had Guiding Reading groups and the students worked very well. We worked on solving subtraction problems in two steps and drawing diagrams to show what we know. In Science we explored what a force is and watched a clip on forces. We experimented with marbles and drew annotated diagrams in our Science Journal. We finished the day with our Survivor Feast and games on the oval.

Tuesday morning began with a prayer followed by Cross Country. Congratulations to everyone who participated and did their best. We explored calculating change from money in Maths, continuing with our subtraction principles and worked with 'play money'. In Science, we learnt about Newton's 3 Laws of Motion, watched a clip on push/pull forces and wrote in our Science Journal. We had fun meeting with our buddies and making a wreath for the ANZAC day assembly tomorrow. We also did some work on our handwriting and focused on our spacing and slope. Remember Soundwaves books due tomorrow because of the holiday on Thursday.
On Wednesday we enjoyed being taught by Mrs. Ball while Mrs. West and the grade 4 teachers were attending a development course in 'Learning Is For Everyone' (LIFE). The students explored data and probability in maths and then played two up. They enjoyed guided reading groups and continued with their Aboriginal Culture studies and watched a clip on the Dreamtime. We then attended the school's ANZAC ceremony led by the year 5's and there was a distinctive sombre, respectful determination amongst the students to honour the fallen. Let us hope
that this next generation is able to avoid the mistakes of previous ones, and perhaps, use all new communication tools to create messages of peace and reconciliation, rather than conflict and division.
On Thursday it was wonderful to see such a great presence of St. Vincent's students at the ANZAC march at Robina.
Friday started with Leonardo sharing a truly beautiful prayer for children around the world with the class. We then had a pretest for Soundwaves spelling. The words the students spelled incorrectly are added to the ten core words for the week. We wrote in our prayer journals and also came up with ideas for a competition for Jessica Mauboy and The Voice contestants to visit our school. Some very persuasive writing was evident. We visited the library and some students are not remembering their library satchels and will need to borrow in their lunch hour in order to complete their reading records for homework. In Maths we delved into subtraction problems as a class and then worked on IXL. Macauley perplexed the class with his 'What's in the bag'. The class created their own Wandjna people in pastels on black paper after learning about the history of these mystical Aboriginal characters depicted in rock art in the Kimberley region. We had assembly after lunch with Christian Lawrence and Andrea Moss receiving the Mercy Quality Awards this week. Congratulations! We revised Passover and the students wrote their own understanding of what Passover means. Laura, Leonardo, Emily, Brock, Max M and Tyreece earned the most Dojo points this week and were able to 'roll the dice'.

Most Soundwaves books were returned, ready for homework to be sent home over the weekend and due back next Thursday. We finished our survivor unit, ready for the obstacle course and treasure hunt tomorrow. We then explored Dreamtime stories in our Aboriginal Culture booklets. Remember to wear sport's uniforms for tomorrow.
Friday was an exciting day. I am so very proud of every member of 4 Green for their enthusiasm, professionalism and dedication to presenting a wonderful Holy Week liturgy to the School. 4 Green was awarded the 'Spirituality and Faith' award at assembly for the class's ability to make the Easter story come alive. We are in debt to Mrs Johannes who spent so much time guiding and leading our performance. After morning tea we were thrilled to participate in the obstacle course and we are proud of Team Anaconda for being the most strategic and the best at conquering the course. Congratulations Team Anaconda for fantastic team work. After lunch was class assembly where we were reminded about the ANZAC day march on Thursday at Robina and to wear school uniform. We were also told to remember to collect the stickers from Woolworths for $dollars for our school. We then had a spelling pretest. The words from unit 11 that were incorrect will be added to the ten core words on the homework sheet. This week was unusual with the activities we had on today and we did not have time to explore unit 11 in Soundwaves, we will do this Monday morning.

In Literacy we examine Dream time stories and publish our own. We continue with Guided reading groups. In Science we examine forces and how forces can be exerted by one object on another through direct contact or from a distance. In Numeracy we continue with subtraction principles and move on to multiplication, in addition to learning our 3X, 6X and 9X tables. We will focus on Aboriginal art techniques. We will have speech assessments with students rostered to present to the class. The students will continue to see specialist teachers for Music, Italian and Library.
Due to parent requests as many students have activities every day after school and need the weekend to complete homework, it will now be due Thursday and returned Friday from Week 2. This first week, home work will be due Thursday and will just consist of the Soundwaves Grammar book and Spelling. Please read the notes on homework on the homework page link.
This week sport uniforms are to be worn on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Week 5
Monday morning started with the Church Assembly where we continued to explore Quality Relationships. After the spelling pretest we examined Chapter 5 in Soundwaves and continued with our Fairy Tales. In Science we were excited to see how much the bean plants had grown over the weekend. The students are being encouraged to use the scientific names for the parts including ‘Plumule’ (the embryonic shoot of seed-bearing plants) and ‘Radicle’ (the part of a plant embryo that develops into a root). We revised rounding and reading and writing larger numbers in maths.
The students loved visiting the Green room to take photographs for their postcards. We now have to choose backdrops and use iMovie on the MacBooks to merge the pictures. We finished the day with the 2nd challenge in the Survivor unit.
On Tuesday, the students continued to fill up their Lenten trees with wonderful deeds
they are doing for Lent. The guided reading groups based on the Lexile reading comprehension scores
are working well. Everyone will borrow one of four library books from the Lexile borrowing area. In Maths we played 4 X tables bingo, the students who are
familiar with their 4 X tables excelled in this exercise. See the study ladder homework for X4 tables practice. We also explored transformations: Translation
is a slide, reflection is a flip, rotation is a turn. Then in art we drew
reflections, rotations and translations of a lion’s head. In Science, the bean plants continue to grow.
On Wednesday, the students continue to start the day with their ‘look, write, cover, check’ of their spelling words. In maths we created our own multiplication tables to help with learning our tables. We continued with comprehension reading groups. In Science we started the study of flowers and learnt what the parts of a flower are. In Religion we watched a movie on the process of electing new pope. The Sacred College of Cardinals, the electoral body which chooses the pope, will continue to meet and vote in the Sistine Chapel. Breaking with tradition, though, they won't be locked in. Instead they'll live in nearby Casa Santa Marta, a new hotel-style facility in the Vatican, and will be bused the short distance to the chapel where Michelangelo painted the ceiling and Last Judgement frescoes. The eligible cardinals conduct a secret ballot until someone receives a vote of two-thirds plus one. The ballots are burned after each vote. Black smoke (straw is mixed with the ballots) indicates a failed ballot, white smoke means a new pope has been elected. Since the cardinals meet in isolation, it's the only way to inform the public about the proceedings.
We were happy to see our year 1 buddies again.
We were happy to see our year 1 buddies again.
On Thursday the band students enjoyed an excursion to a a performance given by Australian Army Band. We had guided reading groups and participated in a session with Tony O’Shea the guidance counselor where we explored working as a team and the power you have to control how you feel. Our Buddies in 1 Red!
Week 3.
This week in maths we explored addition concepts and strategies. We used 'Mental Maths' to add and learned that numbers can be broken apart to find sums using mental maths. One way is bridging and another way is using partitioning. We used place value (MAB) blocks to model regroupings in addition problems with larger numbers. We revised estimation and rounding. Some students are still having difficulties saying numbers in the hundreds of thousands, please practice this at home. For example say '284 690'...Two hundred and eighty four thousand, six hundred and ninety.
This week in English we planned a story for our Year 1 buddies. We meet with 1 Red every Wednesday for 30 minutes to read and do activities. We will be using the Storykit App to write a narrative for our buddies. We also revised verbs and edited and published our postcards on the ReadWrite/Think website.
In Science we discussed what we know about plants and the lifecycle of a plant. We watched a plant growing in time-lapse photography and had a pretest on plants. We will be examining seeds and growing our own plant next week. Children will be bringing home a garden buddy for activities to share with the class.
In Religion we explored Lent and completed many activities on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. The children had the sign of the cross in ash put on their foreheads and wrote their own promise for Lent. We watched a multimedia clip on Carnevale di Venezia - the Carnivale of Venice and and discussed the lead up to lent. The CARITAS project compassion boxes were sent home. We discussed the Mercy quality - 'Quality Relationships' and did some role-plays.
In integrated studies we are completing the first challenge in the 'Survivor' unit and have designed and created our team colours, names, flags and headbands.
Congratulations to the following students who had outstanding behaviour this week: Ashleigh, Will, Brock, Daniel, Connor and Mady. Last week Leonardo, Tyler, Mia, Andrea, Tyreece and Emily were outstanding and always on task. Thanks to Jayke, this week's photographer for the great photos.
Good luck 4 Green for the swimming carnival!

Swim Trials - Tuesday 5th February 2013
The class were very excited to catch the bus to the Miami Pool at Pizzey Park for the swim trials this Tuesday. We would like to thank all the parent and staff helpers who braved the rain to help the students on the day. Every one tried their best and we are looking forward to the swimming carnival! Back at school we explored number and place value in maths, and in English talked about text to text, text to self and text to world connections. We wrote in the prayer journal, practised handwriting and we finished our Mercy qualities comic strip and practised the spelling words.
